Sustainability in Metal and Electrical Training: A Handbook for In-Company Trainers

An open training concept (in German) for in-company trainers in the metal and electrical industries: exploring sustainability in one's own company, reflecting on roles and co-determination, and designing concrete measures. Developed in the NiME project.

Sustainability in Metal and Electrical Training: A Handbook for In-Company Trainers

The metal and electrical industries are energy- and resource-intensive, shape global supply chains and offer many skilled jobs. Making them more sustainable is a technical task and a political one, because questions of energy, automation, supply chains and work organisation touch on interests and co-determination in the company. This handbook offers a training concept for in-company trainers and education officers that takes both sides seriously.

The concept has three phases. In exploration, participants look at the dimensions of sustainability and the Sustainable Development Goals and examine their own company through tasks on energy, staff, supply chains, circular economy and automation. In reflection, they derive concrete needs for action and consider their own role in sustainable vocational education and the possibilities for co-determination. In design, they develop measures, plan a project and work on dealing with conflicting goals. Warm-up games and links to the training regulations for industrial mechanics, electronics technicians for automation and systems technology, and industrial clerks complete the handbook.

The handbook was developed in the project NiME (Sustainability in the Metal and Electrical Industries) by Bielefeld University and Leuphana University Lüneburg in strategic partnership with IG Metall, funded by the German Federal Ministry of Education, Family Affairs, Senior Citizens, Women and Youth and the European Social Fund Plus.
