What is it about?
Industry and production are highly energy- and resource-intensive, shape global supply chains and influence ecological and social developments far beyond the individual company. At the same time, questions of energy saving, automation, supply chains and work organisation touch on interests, power relations and co-determination in the workplace. Sustainable development in companies is therefore a political question as much as a technical one. Yet the political and democratic dimension has so far received little attention in vocational education for sustainable development (VESD). How can those who train apprentices address it?
Goals
- Develop the existing VESD training concept from the first NiME funding phase further and anchor it permanently in existing structures
- Strengthen the political and democratic dimension of VESD in the training of in-company trainers
- Produce a cross-sector handbook with a toolbox
- Design a train-the-trainer concept that links learning venues, for in-company trainers and vocational school teachers
- Support other projects in the funding line
Approach
The project builds on the first funding phase of NiME (Sustainability in the Metal and Electrical Industries), in which Bielefeld University and Leuphana University Lüneburg developed a training concept for trainers in the metal and electrical industries in strategic partnership with IG Metall. The concept moves from exploring sustainability in one's own company, through reflection on operational needs, one's own role and co-determination, to designing concrete measures. The second phase starts again with metal and electrical occupations but aims at transfer to other sectors. The work is organised in five consecutive work packages, from analysis to the dissemination of results.
The handbook from the first phase is available as an open educational resource (CC BY-SA 4.0): Nachhaltigkeit in der Metall- und Elektroindustrie. Ein Fortbildungskonzept für die berufliche Bildung.
