Higher Education for the 21st Century: The Module ‘Science Bears Responsibility’

What would higher education look like that is up to the challenges of the 21st century? Insa Otte, Sven Prien-Ribcke and Gerd Michelsen take up this question in their chapter (in German). They outline what characterises higher education that takes responsibility for sustainable development, examine how far teaching at universities in German-speaking countries already works in this paradigm, and reflect on the first-semester module “Wissenschaft trägt Verantwortung” (Science bears responsibility) at Leuphana University Lüneburg as a case from their own teaching practice. At the time, the module invited around 1,500 first-year students to reflect on sustainable development from a scientific perspective.
