Fifteen Years of ESD in Higher Education: Lessons from Leuphana University
What happens when a university makes sustainability part of every student's education? In this edited volume (in German), Gerd Michelsen, Matthias Barth and Daniel Fischer bring together contributions that look back on how education for sustainable development has been put into practice at Leuphana University Lüneburg, and what effects it has had. The book appeared in the series “Ökologie und Erziehungswissenschaft” of the Commission on Education for Sustainable Development of the German Educational Research Association (DGfE).
The contributions are organised in three perspectives: teaching and learning settings, study programmes, and effects and impacts. Several chapters deal with the first-semester module “Wissenschaft trägt Verantwortung” (Science bears responsibility), the predecessor of today’s Transformation Module. Gerd Michelsen and Ute Stoltenberg look back on how sustainability found its way into teaching at Leuphana, Sven Prien-Ribcke and Maik Adomßent describe the Leuphana Bachelor and its first semester, and Sven Prien-Ribcke and Gerd Michelsen reflect on the professional development programme for teachers in the module, which was developed together with the UNESCO Chair.
