About the UNITWIN Network

The UNITWIN Network on Education for Sustainable Development and Social Transformation (UNiESD&ST) is coordinated by the UNESCO Chair in Higher Education for Sustainable Development at Leuphana University Lüneburg.

What is a UNITWIN network?

UNITWIN networks are partnerships of at least three universities in different countries, at least two of them in the Global South. The partners pool their expertise and resources with UNESCO around a shared theme. A UNITWIN network can be understood as the multi-institutional counterpart of a UNESCO Chair.

Phases and areas of work

The first phase of the network ran from 2021 to 2025. The second phase started in 2025 and runs until 2029. The network organises its work in three strands: involving policy, incubating research and impacting practice.

Projects

Current projects within the network include SSATL-ESD, which develops curriculum innovations for ESD in teacher education institutions in Sub-Saharan Africa, and LoLE, which asks how school leaders can be empowered to empower learners. An overview is available on the projects page.
