What is it about?
Many higher education institutions pursue whole institution approaches (WIA) to sustainability, integrating it across curricula, campus operations, governance and community engagement. How are such initiatives conceived, implemented and sustained in different institutional contexts, and which conditions enable or constrain their impact and continuity?
Goals
- Understand how WIA initiatives in higher education are conceived, implemented and sustained
- Identify the enabling and constraining conditions that shape their impact and continuity
- Develop actionable insights into the social, political and epistemic conditions that support or hinder transformative sustainability education
Approach
The research follows a comparative, case-based approach. It draws on qualitative and documentary data from higher education institutions in Canada and internationally that have developed comprehensive sustainability strategies, and analyses their design, evolution and outcomes. It examines leadership models, institutional cultures, funding mechanisms and the role of student and staff activism. The findings are co-developed with practitioners and researchers through participatory processes and dialogues.
