What is it about?

How do young people in Germany perceive sustainability, and which issues do they consider important? The Greenpeace Sustainability Barometer has followed these questions since 2011. It also asks how young people encounter sustainability in school, vocational training and higher education, and what they expect from politics and society.

The study understands sustainability awareness as the recognition that planetary boundaries are being exceeded, combined with a perceived capacity to help bring about change.

Goals

  • Describe how young people perceive sustainability and which issues they rate as relevant
  • Show how they experience Education for Sustainable Development in school, vocational training and higher education
  • Document their expectations towards politics and society
  • Track changes across survey waves

Approach

The barometer is a nationally representative survey. For the fourth wave, the ARIS polling institute surveyed 1,506 young people between 15 and 24 years old across Germany in June 2025. Greenpeace Germany is responsible for the study series. The academic work was carried out by a team from Leuphana University Lüneburg and the Eberswalde University for Sustainable Development (HNEE), led by Daniel Fischer (Leuphana University Lüneburg) with Matthias Barth (HNEE) as co-lead. Full findings, background information and freely available study materials are on the Greenpeace project page.
